No one plan fits all: Coach Jeff Abbott (USATF Level 1 Certified) takes the science behind running and uses it to formulate a plan for each individuals strengths and weaknesses. Through the theory and practice of periodization, the plans are designed to build up a runners strengths while focusing in on the key activities to meet that runners goals.
Coaching Profile: A little about me and my coaching programs. I started running in 1996 as a freshman in high school. I am not ashamed to admit I was the worst guy on the team. But I kept at it and had a great coach who believed in me and knew I would have success in the future. After high school, I was considerably faster now, and went on to run at D3 school Rochester Institute of Technology. My senior year, I was nominated as team captain for my leadership more so than my skill. By the end of the year, I was also our top man.
In the past five years since graduating, I have continued to run and build on my strengths as an athlete. I competed for three years as a runner and triathlete. While the past two years, I have gone back to focusing solely on running.
My coaching programs are based on ideas and theories I have gathered from my coaches in the past, as well as books, magazines, internet blogs, and friends. Even more importantly, the training programs I design are very similar in nature to the programs and structured workouts that I use in my own training. And I have been successful in setting PRs every year. I am still getting stronger and faster, even over college. The only differences between your schedule and mine, are the number of miles and the work/social obligations that help us balance our life and running goals.
Periodization: My main guiding principal is periodization. This is the practice of breaking down a racing season into groups of time and focusing on specific skills during the period. Each period length and skillset is always pointed to the end goal. I do get asked, what about people that want to train year around? That is a great idea, but it helps the body and mind to break it down into these periods and set goals to target throughout the way.
Goals are the most important part: My plans range from 2 months to 4 months. (I have found anything longer than 4 months is too mentally long to focus on, and has too much time for your body to change, injury, goal changes, etc.) What I suggest to fellow runners is to pick out a goal race or two (anything from a 5k to Marathon). And work your way back to today. That goal (along with intermediate checkpoints) will help formulate a plan and give meaning to your training program. My service consists of a lengthy questionnaire filled out by you the runner. Then I take your goals, factor in your history and your future, and create a plan with each days specific workout, mileage, and most importantly the meaning for the workout. How this will get you fitter and faster. After you receive the plan, let me know what you think. Then you are on your way to running bliss and speed.
Plan costs:
2 months - $45
3 months - $60
4 months - $75
